A suivre

KTM SAR 21 - prise diagnostic

https://kds-online.de/en/obd-adapter-euro5-for-motorcycle-6-pin-to-obd2-k-line-can-bus.html

6 pin Plug Adaptor for use with certain later European motorbikes - Moto Guzzi, Piaggio Vespa etc.

This is a new plug type created as a standard (ISO/DIS 19689). This adaptor converts a standard 16 pin OBD2 type plug to a 6 pin plug for plugging into the motorbike diagnostic socket. It covers CAN Bus and K-Line connection.

Models such as the 2019 Guzzi V85TT use this connection.

Can also be used with other hardware/software interfaces that work with relevant models.

KTM - veste Terra Adventure

KTM 790 - Pichler 2ème partie

Suite de la première partie

https://ktmadv.blogspot.com/2019/07/ktm-790-joe-pichler.html

 https://blog.ktm.com/mr-adventure-part-2/

The right KTM ADVENTURE

Joe has ridden big miles on every single KTM to wear an ADVENTURE badge, beginning with the original KTM 640 ADVENTURE. Progression and development make every new version the enemy of the previous version, according to Joe. But after 19,000 km of varied roads and terrains on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R, Joe has got to know the machine very well.

“What I like the most is the weight,” the Austrian says. “It really is low. I think when it is fully fueled it weighs the same as a 1090 or 1190 ADVENTURE when they are empty! And of course, it holds it fuel low down in the bike, which makes it feel even lighter. And that’s a huge advantage when it comes to hard riding conditions. Every kilogram is important.

The character of the engine – not just the power but a thirst rate of 4-5 liters every 100 kms – aligned with the versatility of the electronics with the different ride modes is also a big plus factor for Joe when it comes to the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R.

“For example, when riding in sand, you take the traction control down or off. You can change the engine character; when things are getting really difficult on a rocky road with a passenger, it is a really good idea to go to Offroad mode and be smoother and easier to handle. Then when out in the open area, it is much more fun to switch to Street mode. These are nice things that makes you more comfortable on the bike.”

The wrong time
It would be unfair to call Joe lazy, but he places a lot of trust in his machines and leaves the maintaining to the essentials. Well, not even that. He overshot the recommended first service for the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R by a good few thousand kilometers and doesn’t even lube the chain.

“Usually I don’t see a lot of KTM dealers in these remote places! One time I only changed the oil after 23,000 kms! But in Morocco, the KTM mechanics changed the oil and chain at 19,000 kms. Also they added some fresh tires.”

The right stuff
“Ever since my second trip, I’ve never carried spare tires. With a puncture you can fix it and I’ve never had a tire so destroyed that I could not carry on. Tires are also very heavy, and you can get them nearly every place in the world. Especially If you use narrow rims (Joe uses the narrow KTM PowerParts wheels on his KTM 790 ADVENTURE R), you can always get something. Failing that, you can get tires sent to somewhere – carrying tires is useless.”

As well as tubes, Joe carries spare clutch and brake levers and a fuel pump, due to the varying quality of fuel on his travels. A second clutch cable is also fastened in position ready should the first one snap, another reason he prefers cable over a hydraulic system. He always carries a spare couple of chain links but has never had to repair a chain.

“You never get stuck with a broken chain as you can fix it,” Joe quips. “But with a broken shaft drive it will definitely stop the adventure. And I’ve seen some broken shaft drives at the side of the road. Honestly, I don’t carry chain lube so usually do nothing for it in 20,000 kms. I don’t oil it – on this trip the sand would have destroyed it. For a short trip is better to maintain with oil, but you can imagine how much lube I would need!”

Joe loves the huge variety included with a standard KTM tool box and only adds a few extra items to that kit, as well as tire levers and a small compressor to make a tube swap easier.

“I carry everything I need to do some small maintenance with. If you have a real problem like needing to open the engine or something crazy like that, you wouldn’t do it by yourself in the middle of nowhere! But an important thing is to take spares of all the torx screws on the bike – even the really big ones. If you’re somewhere in Africa, they don’t really use these. So, I make sure I have spares and the sockets to fit all of these.”

The right kit
When it comes to riding kit, Joe prefers the versatility of the KTM RALLY JACKET & PANTS and the freedom feeling and lightweight of the KTM AVIATOR 2.2 offroad helmet. His choice of footwear also wouldn’t look out of place on the MXGP start gate with the KTM TECH 10 BOOTS.

“I’ve met a lot of adventure riders and many are equipped with normal boots and not offroad ones,” Joe questions. “They always give the reason that they are not riding fast, but good boots really protect you. And we know you can crash when not riding fast.”

Aside from his riding kit, Joe tries to travel as light as possible due to the extra effort required with more weight on the bike and the effect on the suspension. His latest Africa trip included a luggage list of:
Five pairs of underwear
2 pairs of socks
One pair of trousers
One pair of shorts
Two T-shirts
One sweater
Toothbrush
Shampoo
Camera
Laptop
Drone
Tent
Sleeping bag with mattress

Usually there’s a stove, but there wasn’t the need on this trip. Joe explains: “In West Africa people are always cooking! And anywhere there are people, the people need to eat. So, you can always get food.”

This logic makes sense to us!

The right technology
There are some big mile adventurers that say you need a bike with as little technology on as possible, even without water cooling. As Joe explained how much he enjoys the different ride modes and electronics on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE, we asked him if he fears being so reliant on these rider aids or worries about too much tech.

“They don’t scare me!” Joe jokes. “I’ve had three bikes with air cooling and being in the sand is not a lot of fun when they are getting so hot! Water cooling is no problem. When I was young, I once said I would never ever buy a bike without an electric starter because if I was so old that I can’t kickstart it anymore, I won’t ride anymore! Then in the late eighties and early nineties the adventure bikes began to get electric starters and now of course you can’t buy one without it now.”
“But out on the road, if people have problems they are usually mechanical ones. If you have no traction control, Quickshifter or ABS because of a failure, you can still ride. That’s the important thing.”

Could you be like Joe? He followed his hobby and passion. Quit his job as an engineer and has been a full-time adventurer for many years. But don’t think he and his wife Renate aren’t hard workers – when not riding they are organizing tours across Germany, Austria and Switzerland where Joe entertains the audience with his original brand of talks.

KTM 790 - Joe Pichler

https://blog.ktm.com/mr-adventure-part-1/

https://ktmadv.blogspot.com/2019/07/ktm-790-pichler-2eme-partie.html

“Africa is my favorite place to be in with the bike,” he continues. “In 30 years, I must have spent over three and a half years riding there in different journeys; the continent is great. My favorite place is Ethiopia as it’s just so different from the rest of the continent in terms of the culture and landscape. And then there’s the Sahara.”

“I’m a motorbike rider of course, but not like a hardcore guy,” he says drinking a hot coffee on a very hot afternoon. “I just learn by doing; not once have I been to a riding school. I’m not really a bike rider when I’m in Europe. Before all these big trips I would ride around home, but now it’s maybe once or twice or year I ride from home to Italy or Croatia. Adventure bike riding starts for me when I leave Europe. I usually ride with my wife, Renate, or sometimes alone. For me that’s the real freedom of riding.”

“Just start,” Joe says. “I’ve met so many people who dream and plan for ages. When I started these big trips, I had never in my life changed a tire! I’m no mechanic. So maybe this isn’t the best approach, but it’s also good in a way.”

“Don’t make too much of plan with Google Earth and all this stuff – planning day by day. You will lose the heart of the adventure like this. Planning can be done a little on the way. You need a bit of a plan, of course, but don’t plan yourself a rigid itinerary day by day. Be open to change. Explore. You can’t be rigid. The hardest thing is to start the engine and leave the warm, nice home. But as soon as you are on your way, you’re away.”

“Border crossing is the main thing that you have to be prepared for,” Joe says with as much seriousness as I’ve so far witnessed. “You have to be organized with all your papers; for customs, visas. Even on small borders, between Senegal and Mali, they take your finger prints and everything. But I crossed 10 countries on this trip with no problems at any borders. But our papers are all ok. If they’re not, then you get problems. So, make sure your papers are ok. It was a lot different 20 years ago …”

https://blog.ktm.com/chris-birch-5-things-i-loved-about-racing-the-ktm-790-adventure-r/

Racing a 1,200km rally in Greece and going head to head with a wild bunch of enduro-powered riders to claim a stunning fourth place result, Chris Birch highlights the top five features on his race weapon of choice, the new KTM 790 ADVENTURE R.

1. Handling & Suspension
Developed alongside the KTM 450 RALLY, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R features a characteristic steel trellis frame suspended by fully-adjustable WP XPLOR suspension at each end.

“It’s hard to believe how well the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R handles in the most extreme situations until you’ve raced one. On day three of the race I hit two huge bumps in a row whilst struggling with the dust. It just ate up the bumps and went straight ahead: incredible for stock suspension!”

2. Brakes
The KTM 790 ADVENTURE R runs twin 320 mm discs with 4-piston radial calipers on each side. At the rear is a 260 mm disc worked by a 2-piston caliper. This model has ABS, Offroad ABS and the ability to switch the safety system off altogether.

“Riding and racing Adventure bikes for long days normally means you always need to be aware not to let your brakes overheat. Managing your brakes temperature in long rally stages is really a crucial thing.”

“What impressed me in Greece was that I could hammer the brakes on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R without any problem.”

“Some of the stages were massive and included more than 400km of riding in less than a day. The less I had to worry about, the more I was able to focus on my racing and my performance during the stage.”

3. Fuel Tank
A 20-liter tank with the fuel positioned low in the chassis gives the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R a range of 450kms and balanced handling even when fully fueled.

“With the extra fuel range I had over most of my competitors, I never had to worry about conserving my fuel,” said Chris. “This was a major advantage for me on some of the longest stages of the Hellas Rally. The shape of the fuel tank allowed me to sit at the front of the bike for more aggressive cornering. With most of the fuel sitting low and close to the heart of the bike, there was no noticeable changes in the handling either.”

4. Smooth Power Delivery
Boasting 95 hp and 89 Nm from the 799cc parallel twin LC8c engine, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R has four different ride modes – Street, Offroad, Rain and Rally – in order to be fully exploited in all conditions.

“During the race we had conditions ranging from rain to extreme heat and dust. In such diverse conditions, it’s always a big advantage to have a smooth and tractable engine. Despite its potent engine, I was impressed by the ability of the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R to find traction on the most tricky or slippery parts of the trails.”

5. Seat
Thanks to KTM PowerParts, a huge array of seat types and heights are available for the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R to best suit each ride and rider.

“For the race I opted to run the KTM PowerParts higher seat. In total during the week we clocked more than 1,500km and it felt great to finish this long week of riding without a sore arse. The seat gave me total freedom to move my weight all the way forwards and back. It just made riding easier.”

“Overall, it was a huge highlight for me to learn how to get the most out of this cool machine. It’s an amazing motorcycle and I enjoyed every moment of racing it in Greece.”

Présentation vidéo au KTM Adventure Rally Bosnia 2019

Restricted to just 500 units worldwide, the third and newest member of the KTM 790 ADVENTURE family is positioned as the most travel capable rally bike. For those riders who demand the most hardcore performance and the very best suspension equipment available, this is the machine that will easily cross continents in order to ride to the start line of a rally.

Based heavily on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R, this exclusive model retains the same steel trellis chassis and the potent and compact 95hp LC8c parallel twin engine, with the major component difference being the addition of the special WP XPLOR PRO suspension. Built in the same department as WP’s Factory Racing equipment, it offers similar levels of performance for extreme riding. An additional 30mm of suspension travel front and back helps clear the most awkward obstacles and also creates a seat height of 910mm for this special model.

The WP XPLOR PRO 7548 fork uses cone valve technology; a unique valving system that permits almost limitless damping performance and combines comfort with bottoming resistance. Setting levels that normally can only be achieved by changing the shim stack can now be adjusted from the outside. The cone valve allows unlimited opening, so harshness of the suspension is reduced.

The high quality and fully adjustable WP XPLOR PRO 6746 shock absorber for the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R RALLY has been developed based on KTM’s unrivalled experience from top-level rally competition. Due to modern, low-friction components, the shock absorber shows a significant increase in its damping performance and reduces the physical strain for riders. The shock absorber employs a progressive damping system (PDS) and has completely – and easily - adjustable damping behavior.

To emphasize its READY TO RACE credentials along with the WP XPLOR PRO suspension, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R RALLY features a weight-saving Akrapovič exhaust, carbon fiber tank protectors and Quickshifter+ as standard. Easily distinguished by its unique color and graphic design with clear screen and winglets, this special edition model comes with narrower rims fitted with tubes for hard offroad conditions, a high, straight racing seat to improve racing ergonomics and Rally footrests for comfort and grip when standing for long days.

Hubert Trunkenpolz (CMO KTM AG): “Quite simply, we’ve built the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R RALLY because we can! At KTM we continually try to push ourselves and the development of our products – this is the READY TO RACE way. We have the equipment at our disposal and we know how to make a truly special bike for our hardcore customers. With its Pro Components range, WP offers suspension close to the same level used by the Dakar-winning Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Rally team on the KTM 450 RALLY. The new KTM 790 ADVENTURE R RALLY is exactly as it says: A rally bike ready for any adventure.”

Further details on pricing, availability and the ordering process for purchasing one of the limited number KTM 790 ADVENTURE R RALLY machines will be announced in the months to come.
